^^^I found the fail.

It would take the PS2 around another year to reach current Wii sales (low supply included).

Leading console this gen has sold ~19M more than last gen leader after ~2.5 years on the market.

Where do you get your numbers? Just check the sales per region. You can see how each console has sold from their launches! With a nice graph!

Just out of curiosity, when some (crazzyman or leo-j) said that ps3 is tracking almost as good as ps2 did you notice how a lot of people whined that he used aligned launch for ps2?

It was crazzyman's legendary thread to which you are referring. And the reason people "whined" was because of his reasoning for "second" years. He lumped a mere 12 or 13 months(over the three regions) of sales for PS2 as a single year and compared it to ~31 months of PS3 for it's first year. Thus it was trying to compare PS2 in a year when it was still heavily supply contrained and barely launched in two territories as it's second year, to a PS3 which had no supply issues, already recieved a price cut, and had plenty of time for developers to get software out.

Additionally, PS3 isn't tracking close to PS2 in any region at the moment.

Shouldn't the same logic apply here?

Anyway, let's agree that you win so we can use lifetime sales numbers instead.

Leading console has sold:

-90 million more than last gen leading console.

Second place console has sold:

+6 million more than last gen second place console.

Third place console has sold:

-0.12m more than last gen third place console.

Wtf?! 360 is the only console which has expanded the market?! PS3 will follow soon... but...

the leading console... no way, -90 million? Can't be.

Edit:

Now you're just being ridiculous. There's no way you're going to try to pretend that 170M consoles were sold at this point in time last generation. And if you are going to go that route, it will be another 6 or so years before this arguement can be made.

No need for the graphs, you've already presented the differences in the #1 consoles by region.

No the same logic doesn't apply here. We're not trying to compare the Wii's 3rd year with PS2's 3rd year. You're trying to compare Wii's userbase from launch to date with the previous gen's #1 console.

In fact the whole arguement is faulty as it's just as wrong to assume PS2->360&PS3 as it is to assume PS2->Wii,XB->360,GC->PS3.

It's only up to November '08, so it's missing about 25 weeks of data, but it breaks it down by region and worldwide.

Why could not it be made now? Of course those numbers will change for every console but the situation is that now. The same logic should apply here but instead you are using "whatever makes ninty look good"-logic. You are giving ps2 almost a year less due to early japanese launch.

It is not about PS2->wii and so on. It is about first/second/third place console.
