Where do you get your numbers? Just check the sales per region. You can see how each console has sold from their launches! With a nice graph!
Just out of curiosity, when some (crazzyman or leo-j) said that ps3 is tracking almost as good as ps2 did you notice how a lot of people whined that he used aligned launch for ps2?

It was crazzyman's legendary thread to which you are referring. And the reason people "whined" was because of his reasoning for "second" years. He lumped a mere 12 or 13 months(over the three regions) of sales for PS2 as a single year and compared it to ~31 months of PS3 for it's first year. Thus it was trying to compare PS2 in a year when it was still heavily supply contrained and barely launched in two territories as it's second year, to a PS3 which had no supply issues, already recieved a price cut, and had plenty of time for developers to get software out.
EDIT: People we're saying it should've been 2002 VS 2008(a comparison that would've pained PS3 in a much dimmer light) or different years for each region(Japan 2001 would be reasonable, 2002 for the rest).
Looking at individual regions is fine and dandy if you want to compare trends in that region alone. When you're trying to compare the overall difference between generations you need to look at similar periods of time worldwide.
