At that time though the trolling was skyrocketing, so it needed to happen.

Somewhat.  It was about half and half.  You had quite a few people get RRoDs (launch models falling apart) and then you had some people just derailing those threads.  Instead of banning the offenders who were trolling the threads, mrstickball foolishly chose to ban the threads so they basically just went into threads about actual games and trolled there (which really sucked if you mostly just read the threads about games like me).

Of course, then since the 360 fan(atic)s weren't busy playing in RRoD threads, they had time to start digging up every nasty anti-sony article they could find and begin posting it as faux-news in the Sony forums.  Of course this cluttered up the forum if you were looking for threads just on the games (like me).

The end result is that the 360 game threads had a sudden influx of Sony trolls and the Sony forums became cluttered with threads made by 360 trolls. 

Lose / Lose for me.
