I don't understand. From what I've gotten, Wii Motion+ would not really improve any punching motion at all, but rather give possibilities for new motions to be incorporated. Have I gotten it wrong?

No, you're right. Gyroscopes aren't sensible to linear accelerations, only to torques (rotations).
