According to various sources over 4.5 million copies of MGS4 have been sold worldwide (to retail) by the end of 2008, so in about half a year on the market. According to sources Gears of War sold less in an equal timeframe, some sources though state the game has now gone beyond 5 million copies, but that probably includes the PC version.
Also CliffyB mentioned Gears was up to the point to having sold over 4.5 million copies (probably shipped and including PC sales, near the end of 2008) at a time when VGChartz already had the game topping 5 million user sales for just the 360.
