To define a nation works on many different levels. The principles of the grounding is one, and it's official modern stand on issues is another. But you could also define based on actual reality. The US can be defined as Christian based on Christianity's huge influence on the Nation and it's people, and because the vast majority of it's pop is Christian.
It doesn't contradict with freedom of religion.
