Apple doesn't compete in the "pure phone" market. They compete in the smartphone market, which is where the big mobile software buyers are. Last I saw, Apple had surpassed RIM to take second place in the smartphone market, and Apple's explosive growth in this sector has led some analysts to predict it will overtake Nokia in four years (for whatever analyst predictions are worth).
The real scary part is internet usage. 0.6% of all internet browsing is done via iPhone/Touch, representing more traffic than all other mobile platforms combined.
