Both Valve and iD are very atypical developers though. They have revenue streams that most don't have (Steam and engine licensing). They can afford to spend as long as they like making a game, due to their wide fanbase and the talent they have in game design which practically ensures good sales. The same goes for Epic which is also raking in the money from licensing Unreal Engine.
