Eh, I'd say that Thief was on that first - I don't know if the series predates Metal Gear, but it damn sure predates Metal Gear Solid.

Metal Gear was released in 1987, Thief was released in 1998.

Anyway, I've only played the demo of the first Splinter Cell and while I did like it quite a lot, I still prefer MGS. I'd say it's mainly due to the series's story but I suppose it's also better in the sense that it's not taking itself so seriously. Of course serious games are often fun but I find MGS better as a whole.
