I just found this article saying the PS3 got dropped to $179 in 2003 which apparently was in response to the Xbox. If the VG Chartz numbers are correct it sold about 50 million already at the $300 price point.

So the PS2 was a huge success even at the $300 price tag. But it also had a bunch of great third party exclusives. Now it just has 1st party exclusives : (.
