I think in spirit he is correct. The quality of the title should be the first focus, not sales. Sadly, its the sales that will determine much about future titles (be they new IP or sequels) from the same developer.
Mind you it's the same for films & books so its not like this is anything new.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
