Here's hoping they took the engine, and Wii-ified it (better textures/geometry, etc..). No reason why they couldn't.

No reason? More time and money ARE reasons. This game and the zapper cost $20 together. You think Nintendo could afford that if they spent time upgrading the engine?
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
