If the "genuinely emotional and touching" one, then it's Mother 3, hands down, no questions asked.

 

 

You can gather "dreams" in the game, that are essentially short novels that detail past experiences of Kaim (and sometimes of the other immortals). Several of these are heartbreaking, to say the least.
