I don't deny by any means PS2 huge library and other merits and value, I agree that the idea may work and I wish Sony it does.
Simply it won't compete with Wii, but with XB360 Arcade, maybe Sony isn't willing to admit it because it hopes to let the sleeping dog lie as long as possible, to set MS on the wrong track as long as it can, possibly forcing it to a rushed reaction instead of a carefully planned one, if everything works as Sony would like. Let's not be ingenuous, Sony's propaganda will be even more bombastic, and often weirder, than usual until it will be able to afford a PS3 price cut, in the meantime it's doing well enough and PS2 move may work, but one thing is reality and likely possibilities, another thing is propaganda.
