I agree that PS2 can't be meant as a Wii competitor.
More likely Sony hopes to make it compete again against XB360 entry level models.
If it's lucky at it, the wildest additional Sony hope about it could be to force MS to "waste" a price cut against it. And in the worst case, to keep on making money from PS2 some more time. That must be all, anything else is cheap propaganda if it comes from Sony, but it borders lunacy if it comes from people actually swallowing that over-the-top PR.
