While I am also shocked you managed to never play a Mario game, I must say, I can fight my confused urge to burn you, and welcome you to the fold. So far you're doing the right thing, and picking up some of the earlier great games that are really cheap now. It's a great way to test the waters and taste the variety on the cheap, and is exactly what I'd do with any system.

I highly recommend Elebits. It's really cheap, and it's really great. The story is pretty pointless and skippable, and the voice overs are possibly the worst ever, but the controls, THE CONTROLS!!! It is a perfect hybrid between Katamari and Ghostbusters!

Also, if you're a Metal Slug fan, Metal Slug Anthology is a must-have. There's nothing special about it being on the Wii; it's just really awesome.
