It's pretty damn obvious that after the ending of Halo 3, we're definitely getting a new story series in the works. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out.
I however do not think that they should branch out too far from the FPS branch. I definitely couldn't see Master Chief filling into all different sorts of games like Mario does.
At all.
ODST is also a nice refresher for the series, and shows that they are really using the halo universe without branching too far from the original game design.
