Graph shows that PS3 sold much more than PS1 in 3 years. So it would take miracle for PS3 NOT to outsell PS1.

 

 VGchartz doesn't have complete data for the PS1 era, so those numbers are not the PS1's true sales

Not surprisingly, PS3 is about 3.5M behind. This is due to both slow sales of the PS3 itself as well as all consoles in Japan.
