The combat does suck in SH1 and it is certainly more intimidating when you can't control the threats in the game. If i remember correctly the nurses were genuinly scary as hell but you don't attack them at all, right?
Less crappy dogs and flying demon birds, more nothing except atmospheric sound plus the minute control over ur own vision. This game is gonna be SCARY
RE4/5 is a total loss to the real survival horror genre.
