It's quite interesting how little people are aware of what got Xbox originally started.

Start for Xbox could be seen when Sony released its Playstation, Computer Entertainment System and "the father of Playstation", Ken Kutaragi, said "i'm going to destroy Micro$oft".
When Playstation turned out to be a success, M$ saw it as a thread and offered Windows as platform for the console manufacturers. Sega was the only one to take the bait. After Dreamcast flopped, M$ did a panic manouver, by putting out Xbox to trying to counter Sonys disruption (the amount of money sank into Xbox should tell how serious the situation was. On a side note, M$ also entered the mobile phones business mainly for the same reasons, to counter potential threat of Nokia and its communicator series).

Despite what the situation currently is, between 360 and PS3, M$ knows that if Sony makes a comeback, they keep on going with the disruptive road, that's why M$ wants to focus more on hurting Sonys bottom line, than to make profit for itself (the current situation is golden for M$ in doing that). Nintendo doesn't pose a threat, atleast this gen, so it's much easier for M$ to try to hunt Sony, instead of fighting for the cash of the expanded audience with Nintendo.
