Studies actually show anyone who views something, is less likely to commit such acts.
Mainly due to a few reasons. In states where porn usages and viewing is higher, the rape rate is lower, and the reverse rate is soon. Violence is down in places which embrace violence in the media. Same goes for anything really, though there is always 1 person used as an excuse. Someone who would of, or had a problem to begin with, just because he owned or played X game now it's the games fault. People like to try and use these as excuses to show games and media have a bad effect on society, when it's the opposite.
Though that doesn't mean children should view any of that material, because it could influence kids of the age 12 and under. To what extent we can't know. Though that gives you no right to buy absolute crap of a game like sonic and the dark knight. You are supporting something which doesn't need or should get it. You are the problem with the industry. If a game sucks, a lot, and it sells, even decent amounts, you are teaching the developers, it was good enough, if they can still make profit. Thus they continue to shovel this stuff out.
It doesn't need to be M-rated to be good, no gamer actually believes that, no real gamer anyway, a bunch of teens get into that habit but slowly work out of it, hell if you looked at my collection I have games from K2 to LBP, folklore to MGS4, and games like locoroco that I love that I bought this generation. I have about 50 or so games that are all in "contrasting" I buy if it's fun, I don't care for the rating.
