Breaking even isn't good enough. Do you watch the news? The econonmy is horrible. People need to make profit, not break even. What's the point of funding something just to sell 'well' or break even? Games need to sell good, great, excellent. Doing 'good' is really doing 'bad' when companies are laying people off left and right.

Why would Suda make another No More Heroes game if it didn't make money? Why would they make another game if they didn't seriously think the sequel has potential to make even more money?
Like you said, they wouldn't fund it to sell "well" or break even. They'd fund a sequel because the first made a good amount of profit. 400k sold, 500k shipped was obviously enough for Suda to make another game in a downturned economy.
