Yeah, It's a shame they released the games seperately, seeing as Sonic & Knuckles released only a few months later. Ah well, the lock on technology pretty much made up for any gripes I could ever have. Like I said earlier, Sonic & Knuckles is a game while Sonic 3 & Knuckles is more of a lifestyle. 
Also... I'm thinking your Genesis/Mega Drive looks something like this?
