Anachronism. By tradition cannons and gunpowder don't belong in fantasy. For example Tolkien didn't have it, nor Robin Hood, the King Arthur legends and so on. And also, in the real world history cannons were introduced very late in the medieval age.

Man, what. There is no single line of technological acceptability in fantasy novels. Tolkien did have gunpowder, it was engineered by Saruman, Robin Hood was half-historical and came from the Crusades, the Arthur legends do involve cannons at the time of Arthur's death....I could go on.

Who says that whatever land this is has a technological progression equivalent to our own, anyway?
