Hey now, they were exiled because they didnt want to follow the teachings in Europe like other Europeans.
The US was founded on the belief that one can practice whatever faith or religion they wanted without being looked down on.
I think #2 is more general actually as most religions have a "god" so if you believe in your faith your good.

Actually they were VERY adamant about their religion, and didn't accept people of other denomination, expecially the purists in the north. People were literally given chances to go to jail in England or to go to the Americas and work the land. Most chose to stay in jail in England. They also sent most of their criminals over to the Americas. Overall America was created by criminals and religious fanatics, who were most definitely not accepting of other religions.
