2D or 3D is fine, although I give the edge to 2D because I generally prefer the hand drawn look of a lot of those games.
Besides that, watching these brave little sprites go through their drama is kind of heartwarming. I understand it when they get all self-doubting and are reduced to spouting ellipses. They're just teeny tiny little sprites, after all. When it's some 3D Cloud alike wallowing in self pity, I just sort of hate the fucker.
