@selnor: So just do the maths: this gen's winner has every interest in keeping it alive as long as possible, whichever competitor stops before, so much the worse for it, as Wii is winning with really huge absolute numbers, but with a market share smaller than PS2 last gen, so it's leaving more room to competitors. This doesn't mean that nobody should launch its next gen console too early compared to Nintendo, each one should follow its plans about this, but simply that it shouldn't retire its current console as long as it sells well.

Big difference, PS2 had a year advance over its competitors to build up marketshare, Wii entered the market a year behind one of its competitors an has since then thundered to almost 50% marketshare, in the face of frequent supply issues, in fact WW it has sold faster than both the DS and the PS2

Yes, but now it's hovering quite stably around 50% and supply issues are over. But it must be repeated that that 50% means an absolute number, as I said and you showed, greater than what PS2 got in the same time, this means that this gen current user base is alredy HUGE, even after 3and 1/2 years for XB360 and only 2 and 1/2 for Wii and PS, and it still has wide growth potential, retiring too early would mean kicking away big possible sales and it would be particularly detrimental to Sony or MS, as they must recover bigger initial investments.

Thing is Nintendo's Sales arc for the Wii is much larger than that of that 360 and PS3, PS3 and 360 will see tapering demand before the Wii, the Wii for example has yet to see a price drop or an alternative color come out, unlike its competitors

Actually the Wii is already seeing huge tapering demand in its home market where it is selling 50% less in 2009 than in 2008 so far and 2008 already sold less than 2007.
PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !
PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !
