Like i said, we discussed the Japan issue with consoles in a lot of threads, and we came to the same conclusion about the Xbox brand being American... And about the other brands, i said "survived", not "beat down the competition" because i don't have the sales of them vs the competition (and i might add, Windows doesn't have J-competitors and the other brands are not having a war like the Xbox is having with the Playstation)... But if you like to give a better explanation of why the Xbox brand is not that popular in Japan despite having a JRPG with part of the Chrono Trigger Dream Team, a JRPG with part of the Final Fantasy original team, a Tales JRPG and two Tri-Ace JRPGs (one of them a popular established franchise), be my guest... |
Sure. Jrpgs largely don't matter.
JRPGS are mostly niche... even in Japan.
No RPG not named DQ, Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts have sold anywhere near dominate numbers even in the PS2 era.
The best selling non DQ, FF or KH RPG on the PS2 being Tales of the abyss at 570,000.

The numbers really aren't there to suggest that a "Huge shift" would occur. Maybe a half million extra people at most could be added to the PS3's ranks and that's with the rosiest possible outcome... and also just about the least likely.
The best selling JRPG on the PS2 in America not of those brands? Well that ones interesting. Star Ocean 3. at 740,000. After that it's worse then Japan however it's hard to argue that it isn't in their best interest to expand into the west. Espiecally if they're getting paid to do it as many Sony fanboys like to surmise.
Why isn't the 360 popular? Because the games that do sell amazingly in Japan are still on the PS3. Many are exclusives.
Gran Turismo, Everybody Loves Golf, Yakuza and Metal Gear Solid.
Combined with games like Winning 11. These are the franchises that matter... along with Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts.
The rest are largely nonfactors.
Why then the huge drop in PS3 sales then? You say. Simple. Even those games aren't as big a factor as you think. The main factor is the system it's self and it's perceived value. Nintendo offering new expierences brought both new gamers and old gamers who have been playing a lot of the same games over again together with new expiences.
