There are plenty of American gamers that would only play US made games on PC from the 8-bit on up to the 6th gen. And that have only bought the xbox because its the first American game system since the 2600 days. So, there are US gamers that are just as biased against Japanese systems imo.
It's just that games like Gears (with its tons of violence and American footballer type protagonists) and Halo don't mesh well with with the more delicate artistic sensibilities of the Japanese.
If an American studio was to create a game that was considered to be a good game by the majority of pundits in the industry and if it had female protagonists that looked like these:
it would do much better in Japan than Halo and Gears.
