Sorry, I just can't resist.
lol noobs, only a few of you mentioned Doom, the game that popularized the whole genre. Also, most of you ignored Half-Life (as overrated as I think it is, it can't be ignored). It is also very worrying to see most of you think of this gen only and maybe a bit of the previous gen (Halo, that is).
Anyway, shooters are something I really prefer to play on PC. Usually they're not even close to terrible on consoles either, but they just are superior on PC.
Also, Half-Life, Halo, Killzone, Call of Duty are all overrated. Well, maybe the first Half-Life has almost deserved its reputation but even the second one hasn't. Halo was simply the first succesful console shooter, nothing special about it. Killzone is just another good shooter. Call of Duty... Well, I enjoyed the first game and even the second (albeit significantly less), but it's getting pretty boring now. They're all the same. Many other shooters are overrated as well, these just were the ones I could think of now.
Oh, and one more thing. No game this gen has defined the genre. The only real innovation this gen is the cover system, and apparently even it existed before. Thus, Gears of War is the only game to have earned some reputation, for popularizing the covers system (as much as I dislike it already). No other shooter has done anything significant this gen I believe.
