i would say "yes", it is part of living since living a better life is about options. home offers a variety of things to do when you are bored.

personally, the only time i go on home is to check out a new area or take part in a competition. how, there shit lots of people who use home for social networking and for them, home is a blessing for them. granted it isnt everyones cup of tea but atleast we have the option to use when we feel like it.

as for sony, as home is growing, more people are using it (social networking geeks), and the content they add, the more micro transactions are being made. sony is making money and more companies are joining them. these companies (SEGA, CAPCOM,EA etc) arent silly, they see profit and a advertising platform. if home was a flop, it would have never gained their support.

do i like it? when am bored and want a change of pace, yes. its free, why should i complain?
