Pokemon on consoles never felt like a real Pokemon game honestly. It never did (and almost couldn't possibly) follow the core mechanics of Pokemon that started it all. I think it would be pretty much impossible.
Now I'm hopeful that they'd make a good core Pokemon game that is actually somewhat fun and innovative, but not made as a Pokemon cash-in.
