Rapture's citizens and infrastructure all went kabooem in 1959. In the first game you played in 1967. 10 years after is 1977. So basically, it makes total sense. People live longer then 2 decades you know! Yeeeaaah, it's true! It's one of the best kept secrets of this world XD.

 

That still doesn't explain how you kill Big Daddy's in 1967 and then play as "the first Big Daddy ever" in 1977 when rapture was collapsing around you at the end of the game.

Just cause it was collapsing doesn't necessarily mean everyone died, and it just means that you play as a Big Daddy that you didn't encounter in the first game.
