I think there are those who appreciate these sorts of games and those who don't. I personally can pick up an Atari VCS or NES or Genesis game I've never played before and feel it's an awesome game. Some people apparently can't. Some people feel that even games they liked before are not good now, but most games I liked when I was younger are still good if I replay them. Sure, there are some games that haven't aged well IMO (StarFox, Altered Beast, Final Fantasy), but if you ask me those games really weren't that great in the first place, we were just wowed by graphics or story.
The truly great games you can go back and play and feel are still awesome. Contra, as mentioned by a wise person in this thread, is an excellent example, as are many of the games in the Genesis collection (although it is crazy they didn't include Revenge of Shinobi, one of the best Genesis games). Any SRPG fan who hasn't played Shining Force should get this collection pronto.
