You are definitely thinking of Ogre Battle 64, which is the sequel to this game.

So this is the SNES version. Does it play the same way? Checkerboard, class rank, monster catching?

The checkerboard is made up of 3x2 instead of 3x3, but you can fit between those three rows so it's essentially 5x2.

Classes and leveling is there.

I.... actually don't know if monster catching is there.
