I can look at it a different way. There is demand among the workers for negotiating power, which causes the creation of a market entity (union) that provides it to them for a fee.
Wal-mart, in fact, has to resort to quite drastic means to stamp out this natural process, including IIRC firing the entire staff of at least one store that unionized.
I had thought that Wal-mart's treatment of employees was quite infamous; IIRC I read a newspaper article not too long ago about a class-action lawsuit they lost. Do you really need me to dig up the dirt? I'll be back.
