NPD: 29% of Wii gamers play online. Higher percentage than the PS3.

Not quite.  Statistics can be misleading.  Here we go:

"We start with the pool that play games (61 percent of population ages 2 and over)," NPD analyst Anita Frazier explained to GameSpot." 

Read: Of the total population of (I'm assuming) N.A. over the age of 2, 61% play some form of electronic gaming device.

Edit:  And if they polled 20,000 people and 5,000 played games online, then it does mean that the % rose from 19% to 25% of the general population.

"Of those, 57 percent play online."

Read: So thats actually 57% of the 61% who play games.  Or roughly 35% of the general population. 

Which means: That out of EVERYONE who plays an electronic gaming device, 43% DON'T play online.  This includes the PC as well.

 

Was the 5000 number ever actually stated by the NPD though?  Or was that just assumed based on the 25% figure.

I realize that the 57% is just out of the gaming subset of the population.

After looking around a little more, it seems few sources totally understood the numbers.  Some say half of the 20,000 play online on the 360.  Some agree with Gamespot, others with Arstechnica, etc.

Anyways, it seems to be....

61% of the population 2 years and older play games.
57% of those gamers play online
2008 saw a 19% increase over 2007
2009 has seen a 25% increase over 2008
Out of the 57% of gamers who play games online...
87% play on PC
50% play on 360
29% play on Wii
20% play on PS3

87+50+29+20 does not equal 100. but 50+29+20 is very close
