Trolling actually derives from an old fishing term which referred to a specific way in which you were looking to catch a specific fish. It's true!
From this came the colloquial use of the word, which was eventually used to mean "seeking out something one wants". So if one were to be "trolling for girls", you're probably looking to score a hot date.
In internet circles this definition has been narrowed - whenever a person is accused of "trolling", it means "trolling for a flamewar".
Or thereabouts.
I think.
