We're getting close though, that's what's truly scary. Einstein said that it would be impossible to tell what happened before the universe began, but if the big bounce hypothesis (or is it a theory now?) is proven then we have a chance of finding out. How far we have come is scary and we may have barely scratched surface yet.
With regards to the LHC if we find the Higgs boson then it may possibly be one of the biggest discoveries of all time, also Peter Higgs would live to see it proven, which many scientists never get to see, it would be special for him.
