coolestguyever I'm going to guess you never read the source material, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. But if I'm right you might wanna read it: it's really, really good. Fans have been clamoring for an adaptation of it for years. This is not just trying to jump on the bandwagon of other superhero movies.

@scottie: I enjoyed 300 for what it was: mindless, gory, and with no higher pretensions than "FREEDOM! HELL YEAH!" to its name. It was brutal, stupid, and brutally stupid, but it was honest.

@Johann: I agree that it could not reasonably have been any better. My fiance disagrees on this point, but the point I hold to is that the narrative of Watchmen is so sprawling and paced so specifically for a gaphic novel that, when put to the screen, it become an indecipherable mess.

Even if the fans have wanted this for years, I would guess that the reason this was green lit now was so that it could jump on the superhero bandwagon.

As for 300, I thought it was a decent action flick, but I hated it for messing with historical events.  I'm not sure it was as shallow as you think it was, though.  My sociologist girlfriend actually saw a lot of parallels to the US political climate at the time (something about senate scenes in the movie and justification for Iraq war in real life).
