I think it's true that it might be the worst thing Sony has done to the consumer, but I think there were many other things Sony has done to screw themselves over in worse ways.
For all we know, Sony could be bringing BC back when the PS3 is profitable, so it can help move some hardware again, but selling less units at a lower cost (read: no BC) could have been something Sony planned for, when removing BC, so they would go less into the red.
Personally, I'm hoping they will bring back BC with the PS3 Slim, in which case I will certainly have to "upgrade" to that one 
Also, WipEout HD supports Remote Play? :o
