If it helps, I pretty much second the OP's enthusiasm--it really is an amazingly fun, back-to-basics, JRPG with a whimsical spirit that's a welcome break from all the Deadly Serious JRPGs(TM) with which we're typically 'blessed.'

Plus, the battle graphics are just drop dead gorgeous, especially the almost ludicrously fluid enemy animation (and in glorious 2D, to boot!), plus there are some wonderful musical tracks.

The only downside I can really think of is that, at some points, you'll want more dialogue (if only to prolongue and deepen the sweetest moments).

I really can't recommend it enough.

Is it more fun than DQVIII? I found DQVIII rather dull.

Yes, I think it's safe to say that DQ hit its peak with IV-VI and its been a bit of a slide in quality with VII and VIII--hopefully IX arrests this and is a true return to form.
