After Yakuza 3 PS3 owners in Japan are getting another blockbuster title this month Capcom's Resident Evil 5 that also comes out on the Xbox 360. I wonder how much this series is able to sell in Japan at the moment on HD consoles especially now when it become so shooter oriented similar to Gears of War series.
Lets look at RE games from this and previous generations in Japan (im not looking at those ports of RE i RE0 because they are a Joke)
this gen
Resident Evil 4 Wii opened with 46k and achieved sales of 140k
Umbrella Chronicles (a on Rails spin off) opened with 110 k and sold 280k
Both games did extremely well especially UC for being a On Rails Shooter, which could suggest that RE is still big in Japan and capable of selling very good numbers.
Last Gen:
Resident Evil 0 opened with 205k and sold 450k
Remake opened with 150k and sold 360k
Resident Evil 4 opened with 142k and sold over 220k
Resident Evil 4 port on the PS2 achieved 240k opening week and 490k
Those numbers suggest that went more shooting oriented Resident Evil games tend to sell less then the ones faithful to the original concept. But i personally think that series is big enough to achieve good sales in Japan. 500k Ltd for PS3 version ? or am i being to generous?
