why does everyone think Nintendo would have been unable to match the power of the Xbox360 or PS3? Nintendo's consoles have always been if not the most powerful of the generation then they always held themselves up. The Gamecube was by far the best console of last generation technically (being much smaller than the Xbox yet about as powerful.

Nintendo has a lot of money, a good relationship with IBM and some very talented engineers, they could easily have made a console that was as powerful as the PS3/360. But then it would be just as expensive, and wouldn't have anything to distinguish itself from the others. It would have most likely been a Gamecube level failure.

Nintendo didn't make a less powerful console because they couldn't compete with Sony/MS. They made a less powerful console to keep costs down both for the consumers and (more importantly) for the developers.

Its not that they couldnt, they could have but they would have had to charge more. And IBM wasnt going to hand Nintendo the Cell processor to work with. lol

Yeah the gamecube was nearly as powerful as the Xbox, but to those who it mattered, the XBOX was more appealing because of the hard-drive and internet access, etc.
Nintendo could have released GameCube2 at $349 or something with the power of a 360, and take a profit loss, but then, why not just buy a 360, since it has more games?
