As yatzee at zero punctuation says, he likes games where the story and gameplay walk hand in hand, where in JRPG's they are kept on opposite sides of an iron gate made of lions. I agree with him, and tend to like simpler storylines that still manage to be compelling and sometimes humorous (depending on the story).
I heard a long time ago that Zelda has it's bases in mythology. Also, I personally believe that many of the Zelda stories are re-telling the same story of previous zeldas, like OoT is re-telling Zelda (NES). If that is the case the story works. If you ask Miyamoto, however, he will just make shit up
