I think you are missing the point.
The critic is about the boatload of "me too" games that seems to follow the market leader -- not necessarily about sequels themselves (though they can also become "me too" games).
There are a lot of FPS games out there, for example. And some of them are just there because that is what people buy. Often, they add nothing and rely on pretty graphics to sell. And often they do sell, but bring nothing new to the genre.
