I guess the problem EGM (and Joystiq, etc) had with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games is that the characters didn't play as expected. For example in the game's stats, Sonic has one of the fastest speeds, Mario one of the highest jumps, but when they played the game those stats didn't seem to show onscreen (the AI Sonic would come in dead last in the 100 meter dash, both Joystiq and EGM mentioned Sonic losing running events as strange). Basically from the E3 demo the characters performance depended solely on fine flailing rather than any of the character's stats coming into play. Maybe they worked on that and fixed it by the time Leipzig rolled around. I could see the problem the developers would have though, everyone would pick Sonic or the fastest characters for speed and acceleration if stats played a major part (or even minor) in the game and it would unbalance the game.
