The one that affected me the most, like many others, was FF III/6. And twesterm has done a good job of summarizing some of the reasons this game is held in such high regard by so many. I absolutely loved the part where Kefka poisons the water and kills Cyan's wife and son. I think I wanted to cry after that.

I would like to add that the original Gabriel Knight would probably be number two on this list. It came out at the pinnacle of adventure games and truly one upped King's Quest and the rest of the genre with it's engaging adult storyline and puzzles.

Numbers are like people. Torture them enough and you can get them to say anything you want.
