 Germany on its own has a greater export industry than the US. Let alone the rest of the EU.

 

Yes but most of the German export goes to other EU countries. The EU has rufly an equal size export industry as the US if you exclude export within the EU.

 

Because the EU is all about inside trading. So if it was 1 *country* all the areas would be trading with each other. Different parts of Europe specialist in different things, so it wouldn't need to import that much. Besides, of course....energy.
