Viva Pinata is the best example so far, I think. It's a new IP turned into a franchise, and although I'm sure MS threw some weight behind it, I don't recall any big ad campaigns. I don't really know the game, but I've never heard it compared to another game so as to suggest it was derivative.

What? I sure as hell do. I remember seeing Burger King Commericals afvertising Viva Pinata toys, my Apple Jacks had Hudson Horstachio on it, and Microsoft got 4Kids to make a lousy Cartoon about Viva Pinata. Not to mention it was a game made a by a then reputable developer that got great reviews.

Microsoft threw plenty of money behind promoting it, even if not very wisely. (4Kids, great call.)

Seriously I like Viva Pinata, but I hardly consider it a rousing success all things considered. Look at the sales of the sequel. It was budget priced at $40 and it still hasn't crossed 400k. =/

So much for that theory. Guess I wasn't paying attention.

Me either. I don't remeber seeing much advertising for it outside of the crappy TV show.
